Rejecting a Review

books-2241631_1920

Hello friends!

So, I know that I have not been active on my blog lately, but I have still been reading and writing in my own time. I do a lot of writing now days, at least 1,000 words a day, though I am not working on any one particular item. I am waiting to get my new office set up, hopefully with in the next month or so.

The other day I was contacted by someone who wanted me to read and review a book for their client. I was ecstatic seeing as I have not had a review request in a while. With an inactive blog like mine, you don’t get too many. I forgot how stressful it could be. I took the request and gave it my very best and the worst thing happened…

I could not finish the book. Oh yeah, Heather DNF’d a book. I don’t like doing that. I hate not finishing a book, but when you have so many books that you want to read, that book you are not enjoying can terribly slow down your reading progress. Sadly, this resulted in me having to email the publicist and informing her that I could not finish the book. I thought long and hard on how to approach the situation and I was afraid of cutting ties to other reviews.

Here is what it all comes down to. As a reader and reviewer, what I read is my choice. No one pays me to read their books. No one pays me to put a review on my blog for their books. Yes, I could get more traffic to my blog, but enjoying what I read is a little more important for me.

The thing that I hate more than anything is giving a bad review for anything. I will give semi bad reviews, but most of the time I will avoid really negative reviews. Although, I have been known to leave a few bad reviews on Goodreads.

This book that I read I did give up to 30% before I sat it down for good. It’s hard to know when to put down a book. And to be honest with you, why do we feel the pressure to pick a certain spot to stop at? Again I say, most of us read for the joy of reading. No one is paying us to do this. If you don’t like a book, put it down and move on.

One day, when I have published my own book, I hope to get honest reviews. I want to know if someone disliked my book so much that they couldn’t even finish it. As a writer, listening to things like that could make me a better writer. I am not out to please every reader, but if someone were to put down my book I would want to get down to the reason of it. Did they put it down because it just wasn’t their cup of tea? Did they put it down because I needed to put more work into it? Did they put it down because the writing was horrible? The more you know about how your readers feel, the better a writer you become.

With all that said, I have learned a valuable lesson with this rejected review. Reading is what I do for fun. It is a hobby just as my blog is my hobby. If something causes me to lose interest for my hobby, you leave that thing behind so you can get back to the love of the hobby.

I will also give any book a try, but as soon as I am not into it, I will not feel bad for putting it down.

How about you? Do you DNF books? Why or why not? And if you do DNF books, at what point do you let yourself be okay with moving on?

Just a Little Thought

Hello Friends!

I realize that my blog has been very inadequate lately. In all reality, it started dying about August on 2016. I don’t know where my head has been. I mean, my head hasn’t been here mentally. Physically, I go through the motions of everyday life, just the things that will keep me going, like eating, sleeping, and going to work. I think I have become a good little actress, pretending to be present when my mind has been so far away. Hiding from something maybe. Well, I know what I have been doing. I have been battling demons. Battling demons and digging my way out of deep holes of…depression, regret, anxiety?

There is also the issue with the fact that I have been dealing with what to post. I want to post things that are meaningful. I want to inspire people with my words, because it’s all I have to offer. I have written book reviews, movie reviews, and little tidbits about TV shows I am interested in. I have written short stories and random ramblings. But what does it all mean? What is the purpose? I have a few hundred followers, but not many that even comment on a post. Which I deserve because I don’t comment much on other blogs myself. But it also means that things I have been saying just don’t mean much to others.

I am facing the music. When I sit down to write a book review, I am not writing about the author, the structure, or the tone of the book. I am writing about the story, which means I pretty much love everything I read. As a writer myself, I know the work that goes into writing a story. I have that in the back of my mind with every book I read. Usually what I read is exactly what I wanted to read. I don’t get stuck too much on the structure, the proper use of this or that, or any of the technical stuff, so what am I really adding to the world with my review?

It’s the same thing with movie reviews, though, I tend to be a little more critical with movies. Mainly horror movies because that is my genre of choice. I always feel like I have more to say about a movie than a book and sometimes that just makes me feel like an idiot. I feel like, maybe I am not getting what I should be getting from books. But who is to say what I am actually supposed to get from books? I read for pleasure just as I watch movies for pleasure.

What it all boils down to is what am I writing this blog for? Who am I trying to fool with a review here and there? What is my purpose for this blog? I have had so many blogs in the past and they have always been about feelings and what I have been doing. This blog started off with stories of how awkward I am and some how came to this point where it was about reading and writing. Can I really have a blog that is just about that? I want to say my life is about more than reading and writing, but here lately that is basically all it is. I don’t do much more than that.

With that being said, I am learning to listen to the world. I am hearing things that people say. I am on a journey to learn how to control my temper and my urges. By urges I mean eating, sleeping, and just laying around. My urges to be lazy. Nothing crazy like hiding bodies in my closet…don’t look in my closet.

I am trying to get a handle on myself and become more of a well rounded adult…isn’t that the adult thing to do? Not that I am much of an adult, trust me, age is just a number. I am a reader, writer, and a dreamer. I will always have my head in the clouds and a story waiting to bust through. But I want to be more than just that. I want to be…

Truth is, I don’t know what I want to be. I want to be a published author. I want to be healthy. I want to be fun and outgoing.

Okay, so maybe I do know what I want to be, I just don’t know how to get there.

So, while my blog will continue to be about my writing and what I am reading, it will become more. It will be about movies that I absolutely loved…or hated. It will be about my new passions and old. It will be about how things in my life change and how they stay the same. It will be about me pushing my own limits and stepping up to my full potential.

I just don’t know how to make it all happen, or how to put it into words that people want to read. I am a writer though, and I will figure it out.

I Bring you a Gift!

Hello Friends!

So, back a few years ago I did an interview with an author…possibly my first author interview I ever did. (I really want to get back to author interviews) Well, this author just so happened to be Jonas Lee! You can check out that interview HERE. And you can read my reviews of his first two books HERE and HERE.

But the reason I am bringing up the great Jonas Lee today is because…HE FINALLY HAS A THIRD BOOK! Though, there is still not set release date we do have a cover! What? A cover? Why yes! That is exactly what we have.

So…drum roll please…

A Time to Die

BAM! Not going to lie, I love this cover. I also love that the cover matches the last two covers…because that is a thing that we book lovers love. I can not wait for the book to come out! I have something else for you!

BOOK BLURB!

Carter Gabel saved his own life, and rescued his city from destruction. But, after the Pirates forced him into hiding, he spent years holed up in Crighton, city of ghosts.  Just as he thinks the world has forgotten him, a knock on the door interrupts his life and as he opens it, his next journey begins. An unexpected foe waits for him at the end to challenge everything he knows and all that his future holds. What must Carter do to survive? And what does he sacrifice to become a legend?

And if you are wondering who Jonas Lee is…here is a little about the author!

JonasLeeInterview

Writing out of the Black Hills of South Dakota, Jonas likes coming up with new and creative worlds that speak to the plausible while remaining believable. With a fist-full of peanut M&Ms and a cup of coffee, he has written three novels about a snarky, supernatural teen able to time travel and more.

Beyond writing, Jonas has a gift for useless knowledge through watching trivia shows and a love for cinematic adventures. Music fuels his writing and you can see him with at least one earbud in every day.

Now that I have updated you on all this amazingness…I am going to go re-read the first two books to get ready for the third one that I have been waiting forever for!

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends!

This has been a weird week for me. I haven’t been able to focus on a book. I started reading one and it was so bad that I had to put it away. It wasn’t something anyone should read to be honest. It was horribly written and the subject was not cute. It was victim of an author trying to take a serious subject and make it sexy. I have a review of that one coming soon. It just ticked me off.

I started on a book last night but I didn’t really enjoy it, so I may be DNFing that one too.

I am reading one book though that I am actually enjoying.

Kings Cage by Victoria Aveyard

30226723

Seriously, the cover alone is amazing. I know this series has gotten a lot of crap, but I love it! I have only read a few chapters, so everything is basically still being built up and reminders are in place. I’m just hoping its going to be as good as the last two books.

That is really the only book I can actually claim this week. It’s the only one that I am seriously reading. Everything else has been a search for something, though I am not sure what I am looking for. I should probably just focus on this one book and try to find something after I finish this one.

What are you reading?

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends!!

It’s that time again. I actually have something new this week. And I am not reading just one book. Come on, you didn’t think I could last that long reading just one book at a time did you?

Let’s jump right in!

Artifacts, Dragons, and other Lethal Magic by Meghan Ciana Doidge
29816822

I love love love this series. I love the main character and all the hot guys she has in her life. I love that she owns a bakery and kicks butt. I love everything about this series. It is also feeding the deep dark void that was left when Kim Harrison finished her Hallows Series. Now I have this, and Jade, and cupcakes!

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
17675462

I have been known to avoid a series of books just because of the hype. I avoided this one for that reason and now I am asking myself “Why, why, why?!” So far it has been such an amazing story and I can’t get enough of it!

Undercurrent by Paul Blackwell
16065498

I don’t have much to say about this one yet. I haven’t been reading it as much as the other two books. I can’t help it, I love the other books so much they have consumed me. But so far Undercurrent has been interesting and I am hoping it gets a little bit more fast paced than what it is. Okay, so I got a little bored with it! But I am just at the beginning. I will at least give it to half way before I give up on it.

That is all I have for this week. I am hoping to finish all these books this week. Which is very likely. I am almost done with The Raven Boys and almost at the half way point with Artifacts, Dragons, and other Lethal Magic. If I had any days off this week (I do but it’s later in the week) I would for sure finish them.

So, what are you reading?

What are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends!! It’s that time again. Time to take over the world!

Wait…that’s not right. That’s next week.

What are you reading?

I am still reading Replica by Lauren Oliver
28448287

It’s not that I am not enjoying the book, I have been having an issue with my energy this week. I seem to always be super tired. I will get to read a few pages before I am passing out. The most I have read is at work on my lunch breaks and that is only 30 minutes. I am not a fast reader, so 30 minutes is not enough to finish the little bit I have left.

But, the great thing is I will probably finish this book today.

So I have two books waiting for me to pick them up. I’m not sure which one I will start.

The first is Heartless by Marissa Meyer.

18584855

I love Marissa Meyer so this may be the obvious choice…BUT!

Undercurrent by Paul Blackwell

16065498

I found this book at Dollar Tree and I couldn’t pass it up. It sounds so good!

So those are my choices for my next book. Maybe I can get to both of them this week. Fingers crossed.

What Are You Reading?

What are you reading

Hello Friends! I’m getting ideas and making plans and goals and I am going to get back on track with this blogging thing. Why? Because I love it! Even if I don’t have a lot of followers, I love connecting with a few of the readers I have connected with. I might start sharing a little something other than reading and writing. Maybe a monthly post on what I am doing outside of the reading and writing world?

Enough of with the chit chat. Let’s get to the reading thing.

What am I reading this week?

Replica by Lauren Oliver
28448287

I am reading one chapter of Gemma’s story and then reading one chapter of Lyra’s story. I knew that if I read one story all the way through, I wouldn’t read the other side of the story. I would be bored with it and move on. But this has been a fun story to read because of how I am reading it. It’s interesting to have two sides of the story, but I find myself wondering about the other characters in the book and what their side of it is. I need all the POV’s!

And that is all…

Yeah, I am focusing on this book because it is a library book and I want to hurry and get it back to the library before my time runs out. Though I am wishing I had bought this book. The concept is so interesting with it being two books in one. I am glad that it was printed that way because I am a little bored with authors who publish a book and then say “Oh, buy this book too! It’s the same story but from someone else POV.”

Also, I have found that I really love Lauren Oliver! I just finished reading Delirium by her as well. She is such a creative writer. I can’t wait to read more by her.

Hello Friends!

As I am trying to get back into the swing of things I have been re-evaluating the post that I really enjoyed. “What are you Reading?” is one of my favorite post. I love sharing with others what I am reading and I love even more when other share with me what they are reading. I don’t have a lot of real life friends that love books as much as I do. So I have to rely on you wonderful internet folks that I love so much!

Let me tell you what I am currently reading!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
9361589

I am listening to this book, but it’s not the first time I have read it. I read this a few years ago. I was enamored by the cover. And the title. I have always been fascinated by stories, shows, and movies that revolved around a circus. Then you put that circus into the night and I am in heaven.

I am loving The Night Circus as much this time around as I did the first time. It is just so full of whimsy and mystery. The visuals are so beautiful and enchanting. If you haven’t read this one yet, I highly suggest it. It is becoming my favorite book. I just want to cuddle with it!

Ensnared by A.G. Howard

22447220

I am having trouble finishing this book. There has been a love triangle through the entire series, but it is getting annoying in this last book and I just want to get on with the story. I will finish it this week, I know that much, but I have not enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the first book.

Ghost Story by Jim Butcher
8058301

I am finally moving on with the Dresden Files. But I am finding this book hard to read…I think it’s just because Harry is dead! I don’t like it at all and I just want to get through it so I can move on to the next book.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
17675462

I almost didn’t want to read this book because of the author. I read her book Shiver and I didn’t like it much at all. I broke down and borrowed this book from the library and I think I might like it. I could change my mind once I get a little more into the book, but at the moment I am glad I picked it up.

So tell me, what are you reading?

5 Top Favorite Books of 2016

Hello Friends!! Just hang in there with me while I get back into the swing of things. I plan on getting back to blogging every day. I have so much to discuss, like shows that I am loving, movies I want to see, and all the books I want to read.

Today I bring to you my top 5 favorite books of 2016.

2016-favorite-reads

This was actually kind of hard to bring my list down to 5. So I broke it down. The first list is the top 5 books that I read that were published in 2016.

  1. End of Watch by Stephen King
    25526965
This was the end of Stephen Kings Bill Hodges Trilogy. It was such a satisfying ending. Most of the serious just has to do with killers, which is scary. But this last book had a little bit of the supernatural in it and I think I loved this book more than the other two in the series.
  2. Frost Like Fire by Sara Raasch
    28512486
This was another end of a series. Snow Like Ashes is such a wonderful book. It’s a different world, a power struggle, and a young girl trying to make her way in the world that flipped her on her head. I love that there was a magical element and the last book brought the whole series to such a beautiful end. I read the entire series in 2016 and when I finished the second book I was so mad because I had to wait for the last book of the series. It was so worth the wait.
  3. Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard
    23174274
Another series…I see a pattern here. I am so in love with this entire series. I don’t care that there are bad reviews about this series, I love it. I will say, the first part of this book was a little slow and bland. There were parts that ticked me off. But the ending did not disappoint. I am so ready for the next book, which comes out next month!
  4. A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir
    25591568
I just read this in December. I have had it and had planned on reading it right away, but I went through a little bit of a reading slump. But then I picked it up and hated myself so much for waiting so long to read it. Then, I got mad again because the next book in the series isn’t coming out until NEXT YEAR! What??!! Of course, from my understanding, this was supposed to be just one book. If you have read the first book you know that no one would have been happy with just one book of this series. This book could end the series, you would just have to fill in the blacks with your imagination. I could do that…but I would rather Sabaa Tahir get another book to us like ASAP!
  5. Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova
    27969081
I read this book in two days. It was a fabulous book! I have heard people praising this book and…well when the word “Labyrinth” is in anything you better believe I will get my hands on it to see what it is. It stems from my love of the 1984 movie Labyrinth with David Bowie.
Labyrinth Lost almost had a Alice in Wonderland feel to it. Alex has to go into a different world to save her family. I loved almost everything about this book. I will say that there is a romance in the novel. A very small mention to the point where it feels like the author wrote this amazing story and then decided there needed to be a love story. It came across as an afterthought and I hated that. This book would still be amazing without any kind of romance and that is why I still love it!

Because I have no self control I am going to move on and mention a few more books. This is kind of my honorable mentions list…but honestly I don’t think I could actually pick top 5 favorites.

  1. The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine
    23299513
I am not going to lie, I wanted to read this because the cover was so gorgeous. Also it’s a retelling of Snow White and I love retellings! I think I have already covered this. I think I would be happy just reading retellings all the time.
  2. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
    15839984
I didn’t know what to really expect going into this story. I knew it was a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but I did not expect the ending. I also didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. This year I would like to read Crimson Bound by the same author. The covers are similar but I don’t think the books are related. As a stand alone Cruel Beauty was a fantastic book and I may end up reading it again.
  3. The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
    18712886
There isn’t much I have to say about this book, except I enjoyed it so much that I asked for the entire series for Christmas. I got it too! I can’t wait to finish the series.
  4. The Star Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
    25203675
The Start Touched Queen was so magical! I loved everything about it. I was so in love with this book. I entered such a beautiful and fantastical world and I didn’t want it to end.
  5. Splintered by A.G. Howard
    12558285
Splintered does not have a lot of good reviews. Everyone seems to really dislike it. Most of the comments are about a love triangle between the main character and two guys. The thing about it is that the triangle doesn’t actually get annoying until the second book and by then you understand why the main character has such an issue with the two boys in her life. Personally, I loved this book. Now, the rest of the series has been a little slow, but this first book really drew me in and I loved it so much. I will finish the series, I am reading the last book now, but none of them have been as good as this first book.

Okay, I am going to stop there. I have 10 books on this list that was supposed to only be 5. I’m sorry! These have no order really. I loved all of these books. The ones that are not a part of my collection will soon be a part of it, and the ones that I already had will be cherished forever.

What were your favorite books you read in 2016?

Happy New Year

Hello Friends!

It has been a while…I feel like no one really noticed or cared to be honest. I am okay with that, but I sure did miss blogging. After missing October and November, I decided in December I just wouldn’t worry about it and I would take the rest of the year off. The last three months of the year are super busy when you work in retail.

But I am back and I have some plans for the blog.

I have a few goals for this year. Fitness goals and reading goals. If you would like to know of my fitness goals you can read about them on my other blog HERE.

As for reading and writing goals here they are!

Reading:

Bookshelves and their treasure. by the Picsees (www.thepicsees.com) Books cute pixies reading:

For 2016 my reading goal was 50 books. I actually reached 60 books. I am rather proud of myself. I may do a post on my top 5 favorite books that I read in 2016.

For 2017 I have set my goal for 60 books. I hope to surpass that this year. I just have to focus on reading when I have free time instead of watching TV or taking a nap.

As for writing:

The key to writing is to stop thinking about writing and start thinking about what's happening in the story.:

I plan on writing everyday. I will start at 500 words, just to get myself back into writing. I haven’t written much in a few months..actually, I haven’t written anything in a few  months. I think I gave up on life the past three months of 2016.

I want to have at least 2 books written by the end of the year. I have so much going on this year, I will make it a fantastic year!

What are your goals this year?
